Nature’s Sensibility

Nature presents to us constantly the reminder of our roots, our organic selves, our place in the natural and creative world.

It also brings us back to what is real and sensible. In short, we are able to retrieve our commons sense and sanity in what is increasingly an insane society.

I’m feeling a little soul weary this morning, so I’m keeping my own words short. But I thought I’d bring you some fave quotes from Henry David Thoreau, on which to ponder today. After this, I’m heading to my park and the river to recharge… I hope you have a wonderful Sunday.

I’ll be launching a book on the Earth and nature very soon, which incorporates both my writing and my art. Please sign up for my newsletter if you’d like to be notified.

Nature quotes by the transcendentalist writer, Henry David Thoreau:

“We need the tonic of wildness…At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.”

“Take long walks in stormy weather or through deep snows in the fields and woods, if you would keep your spirits up. Deal with brute nature. Be cold and hungry and weary.”

210926c

“I have a room all to myself; it is nature.”

210926d

“He who hears the rippling of rivers in these degenerate days will not utterly despair.”

210926g

“Every blade in the field – Every leaf in the forest – lays down its life in its season as beautifully as it was taken up.”

210926e

“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.”

210926b

“Wildness is the preservation of the World.”

Monday’s Courage

How much courage does it take to get up on a Monday and face another week of LIFE? Today, for some people, it will take quite a lot…

Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow.” ~ Mary Anne Radmacher

Just remember, if life’s feeling much better than that for you right now, then look around and see who you can inspire and/or help out. Even just one small act of kindness could go a long way towards helping someone who is struggling to keep their head above water.

We are all connected. What you send out will always come back to you, so aspire to send out the very best that you can. Acts of kindness should be given with love and without thought for any return, but nonetheless, some day you may be the one who needs a little fortification of courage!

Inspirational Courage Quotes:

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” ~ Lao Tzu

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ~ Winston S. Churchill

“Everyone has talent. What’s rare is the courage to follow it to the dark places where it leads.” ~ Erica Jong

“Have enough courage to trust love one more time and always one more time.” ~ Maya Angelou

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” ~ Anais Nin

“Be brave to stand for what you believe in even if you stand alone.” ~ Roy T. Bennett

“Courage is grace under pressure.” ~ Ernest Hemingway

“The real things haven’t changed. It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures; and have courage when things go wrong.” ~ Laura Ingalls Wilder

“Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.” ~ Victor Hugo

“Life is mostly froth and bubble,
Two things stand like stone.
Kindness in another’s trouble,
Courage in your own.”
~ Adam Lindsay Gordon

Reinventing Yourself

How many times in your life have you reinvented yourself? It is likely much more often than you realize. Every time you adapt to different external circumstances, the changes may be subtle, but you have become a slightly different person. Other times, the change may be dramatic.

Big or small, that’s the whole idea behind living. We are meant to change and grow. Our souls were not born into this life to just take up space.

Sometimes we make a conscious decision to “remodel” ourselves, whether that be through a physical weight change, learning a new skill, buying a new wardrobe to project a different image… You get the idea. Changing something on the outside of ourselves can help us change internally. It’s the “behave as if” concept.

However, often life brings us an external circumstance we were not expecting, which causes us to examine our internal characteristics and values. We can ignore it and stay the same. That’s what our ego wants; it wants stability and what it knows. It doesn’t like unexpected surprises.

But when we are brave enough to go with the change, to grow, then we are fulfilling not the ego’s desire, but rather the soul’s desire.

Have the courage to reinvent yourself, over and over again. When you listen to your heart’s desire, you may be astonished at what is waiting to be discovered inside you, if only you give it a chance.

I’d say life is a mix of both. What do you think?

Birthing

How did humanity
arrive at this place?
Almost overnight,
viral war torn,
scarred, skeptical,
frazzled, frightened,
lonely isolation,
madly missing
the joy of life.

Humanity’s vitality
slowly but surely
leaking away,
drained by a
lurking thieving,
deceitful beast,
gluttonous fear
swallowing whole
all who yield.

But the wheel of
fortune ever turns,
the black jar of
Pandora’s woes
morphs to womb
of fathomless
mother goddess
of a Golden Age,
a new humanity.

It’s time to birth
transformation
from destruction;
swimming upwards
to shimmering light,
gulping great drafts
of rarefied air,
reclaiming life and
eager to live it.

Caves are Sacred

Today I tip my hat to the wisdom of men, and one in particular who taught me (with much head bashing on my part) that “caves are sacred”.

Do you have a designated place where you can go to claim a quiet interlude, far away from the fray and anger of the world? Our modern world is always a noisy place, but the volume got turned up full blast in 2020. The mental discouragement and emotional processing of negativity just feel like too much to bear some days.

People often equate the word sacred with church, but have you considered that the term should encompass protecting your own internal landscape? If you do not honor and protect your own peace of mind, if you do not recognize that it comes first and foremost, sooner or later the current craziness of life will take its toll.

If you have not already done so, establish a sacred place where you can find some quiet and cultivate peace within yourself, where you can hear your own voice.

I have noticed that men (at least the ones I have known) are particularly good at this. They call it “going to my cave”. When the big problems feel overwhelming, going to a quiet place and working in solitude on a smaller solvable project allows them a) time to process their thoughts, and b) restores their sense of mastery over their environment. They emerge feeling more in balance.

On a humorous note, a girl friend’s husband emerged from his cave on one of my visits, sporting a T-shirt that read, “What happens in the shop stays in the shop”.

Hmm… It did make me wonder what exorcisms those walls have seen.  😉
