Our Meeting Place

Have you noticed? The world seems to be in a place where we’re always expected to choose sides now, no matter what. Over a year into it, while society is still consumed by daily news of a virus, there is another “dis-ease” that preys on humanity.

It’s called “you’re-either-with-us-or-against-us”. As long as we force each other to choose sides and then attack each other for those choices, there will never be any meeting ground for healing and building. We will constantly be stuck in a state of tearing down, doomed in a fatal downward spiral to a black void.

Imagine a time in future when aliens visit Earth, a beautiful place lush with flora and fauna, but strangely void of other life forms. And in their exploration of this lovely planet, they come upon a huge headstone that reads,

“Here lies Humanity. Sadly, they killed each other with their out of control egos.”

Personally this is not a future vision that I want to see manifest. As Rumi said,

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about.”

Yes, we could make that choice to meet there, together. Imagine everyone on the same side, a unified commitment to constantly see, evaluate, and discuss many points of view, without judgement or a need to “have it all my way” or attack.

It would be a beginning…

Be the Light

The battle between the dark and the light: It’s classic. Some of the greatest stories and movies are based on it. There has always been darkness and light in our world, and in fact both sides exist within ourselves. If it didn’t, our souls would have moved on to “bigger and better” things.

Is it my imagination though, that things are feeling just a tad weighted to the dark side at the moment? When I feel discouraged about it, I take solace in this: In every cycle of this classic battle throughout the ages, when a crisis of the dark occurs, humanity digs down deep to find the best parts of itself. Dark collapses and light emerges.

So, let’s keep on keeping on. Every candle makes a difference. That would be you and I, and every other person on the side of the light.

Be the light.

Inspirational Quotes:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

“A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black, because all things in nature are dark except where exposed by the light.” ~ Leonardo da Vinci

“All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.” ~ St. Francis Of Assisi

“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.” ~ Plato

“Learn to light a candle in the darkest moments of someone’s life. Be the light that helps others see; it is what gives life its deepest significance.” ~ Roy T. Bennett

“There’s always going to be bad stuff out there. But here’s the amazing thing — light trumps darkness, every time. You stick a candle into the dark, but you can’t stick the dark into the light.” ~ Jodi Picoult

Unquestioning

If you are someone who has always counted on things around you to simply be fixed, somehow, by someone else, those days are gone. Our world and reality are in extreme transition.

Time to start really paying attention to events, the unfolding, and not only to what you see, but also what you don’t see. What’s missing?

Time to watch for the incongruities, the inconsistencies, the little details between the lines. Do not persist in looking straight ahead with blinders on. See what is there on the periphery, hiding almost out of view.

Time to question, question, question.

Time to start taking personal responsibility for your future.

And most of all, time to listen to your gut, what your own inner wisdom tells you.

Inspirational Quotes:

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.” ~ Albert Einstein

“Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.” ~ Voltaire

“It is not that I’m so smart. But I stay with the questions much longer.” ~ Albert Einstein

“There are years that ask questions and years that answer.” ~ Zora Neale Hurston

“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.” ~ Voltaire

Freedom is Yours

You are free when you believe you are.

I know, this sounds too simplistic, yes? But think about it, you were born into this world as a free spirit soul. What changed? What convinced you that you are not free? Society? The rules? Your upbringing?

Freedom begins within ourselves. It is not something someone else gives to us. It is our inherent birthright. It is a belief, a thought form, it resides in the deepest part of our souls. It is always there, but it can become very buried.

Ask yourself today, “Am I really free in my mind?” Be really honest with yourself. If freedom is important to you and your answer is no, perhaps it is time to ask yourself why. What are the thoughts that are holding you hostage?

You are free when you believe you are.  Meditate on that. The doorway is waiting.

Inspirational Quotes:

“Life without liberty is like a body without spirit.”
~ Kahlil Gibran

“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
~ Benjamin Franklin

We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it.”
~ William Faulkner

“There is no force that can put an end to the quest for human freedom.”
~ Liu Xiaobo

“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds.”
~ Bob Marley

“The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first.”
~ Jim Morrison

“Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves.”
~ Abraham Lincoln

Nature Teaches Us

When I see a solitary tree in a field, I wonder… Are you lonely out there? Do you yearn for the other trees, your family?

But wait, when the farmer cleared the field and if there were others, why did he not cut you down too? Perhaps there was something in you that he felt. A will to live? A purpose not yet fulfilled?

Were you the one tree that looked strong enough to withstand the solitude, to be staunch and strong through every harshness imaginable to guard his field?

But wait, you are NOT alone. Earth, air, sky, clouds, rain, sun… You are nurtured, cradled, and loved by all of it.

Perhaps you demonstrate that not just simply survival – but dare we hope great joy? – is found in your ostensibly lonely journey.

But still I wonder, DO you miss your trees? Your family?

Hmm. Perhaps not. Perhaps you also teach that it is ALL family.
