Rejuvenate

When city voids me,
I flee to garden refuge.
Hummingbird dances.

Hummingbirds grace my garden with their astounding beauty, and whenever they show up, my heart does a little dance. This was one of the first haikus I wrote for my Hart Haiku blog.

Regeneration

Out of charred remains,
glimpses of green restore faith,
life’s will to survive.

Just as the the forest regenerates after a fire, so is humanity renewing itself after the affront of a pandemic. So it has always been after catastrophes, and so it shall be again. The will of nature and the human spirit to survive, adapt, revitalize, and thrive is astounding. This is creativity in its finest hour.

Does the forest grow back exactly as it was before? How can it? Neither will we. We are changed, and although humans often resist change, we had no choice – it was thrust upon us. Change is a very good thing. It gives us the opportunity to assess what wasn’t working, make improvements, or maybe even do a complete makeover if need be.

So are we currently undergoing a simple regeneration, or will it prove to be an astounding rebirth? This will depend greatly on certain choices we make along the way. What do you think?

Whale

Our telepathy
joins in a monumental
hello of two hearts.

I call, you come, and
brush gently against the boat,
crooning your love song.

Pausing a moment,
is that a wink I detect?
You flirt, then farewell!

Will you invite me
to frolic in frothing waves?
Besotted, I wait.

Cryptic

John Muir loved trees as much as I do. 🙂 Here are a few forest quotes from this renowned writer, naturalist, and conservationist:

“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.”

“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.”

“And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul”

“Going to the woods is going home.”

“Come to the woods, for here is rest. There is no repose like that of the green deep woods. Sleep in forgetfulness of all ill.”

“A few minutes ago every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling, tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease.”

Totem

Star-struck sunflowers,
nothing holds a candle to
your idol, The Sun.

It occurs to me this morning that cats and sunflowers might be “birds of a feather”. There is a certain aloof pride in both that suggests these fauna and flora are connected.

Their arrogance I find quite intriguing, although sunflowers might have it all over cats in this regard – and that’s saying a lot! Above and beyond feeding time, I feel that my cat cares about me quite a lot, actually. But sunflowers? I have this sneaking suspicion that their allegiance lies solely with Mr. Sun!

Us: Arriving in the garden, watering can in hand. Them (disdainfully): “Oh, it’s YOU again. You’re interrupting our sunbathing. Just leave the water right over there…)

In spite of their grand snootiness, I love sunflowers. I have painted them often, and you have to really admire a flower that aspires to be THE SUN.
