Back to the Drawing Board

Sketch1_SusanLHart

I’ve been toying for awhile now with the idea of adding some illustrations to my stories. This means I need to brush up on my drawing skills; I’ve been away from making art for quite some time.

I love wildlife, so this morning I just randomly picked a photo of a bird to work from. I’m not 100% happy with it, but as a quick first attempt, it’s not too bad. Yay! It’s like riding a bike.

I will post some more sketches as I practice. (Sorry for the quality of the photo – in future I’ll scan the work – this will get better.)

Mending Our Broken Dreams

How many people suffer through a lifelong low-grade malaise instead of living a full-on vibrant life, simply because they did not choose to live their dream?

“It’s not my fault. No one told me I should.”

Currently we live in a world that too often does not support creativity and independent thinking, but rather encourages conformity and obedience. The system makes it easy to cop out on our dreams and take the safe, easy path. We’re not taught to have any kind of vision of our own brilliance and bravely follow it.

But built into this equation is also the fact that we ultimately are responsible for our decisions. No one else. And therein lies the real crux of it. There’s also a current trend that says it’s okay to blame someone else, anyone else, for everything that is wrong with one’s life.

Not taking personal responsibility may be the biggest societal malaise of all. If things go wrong out there in the big, bad world, we can blame the system. But wait! We agree to and support it, so we really only have ourselves to blame.

Perhaps real change begins by encouraging the next generation to truly embrace their creativity from a very young age, and not just learning by rote for a society that is outdated and failing.

And perhaps more than that, we need more love, empathy, and support between each other on a personal level. If we cannot count on the support of each other to build our dreams, and as well to have empathy and lend a hand to someone whose dreams are temporarily in tatters, then the system will have succeeded in killing our humanness.

Let’s not let it do that to us.

The Importance of Imagination

Do you use the power of imagination to to create and expand your life? If not, you are not alone. Although right-brained creative thinking does come naturally to some people, it does not to others.

Personally I think our educations systems need an overhaul. We are taught “known knowledge” and we’re expected to regurgitate it by rote. There is some value in that, but it is also very limiting to the innate potential of our human consciousness.

What if part of our education from a very young age was geared towards developing our imagination and creative thinking skills? New inventions and solutions to existing problems require creative thinking. Our world is really in need of more creativity right now, not more “by rote”.

If you feel that your brain is too locked down in “what is” and you’re not giving any time to “what could be”, here is a good article with 10 tips on how to get your creative mind percolating:

“Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere.”

Cultivate Your Power

We live in an information society unprecedented in history. Constantly bombarded with images and words from radio, television, print media, and the Internet, we have scarcely a moment of quiet solitude to hear our own inner voices. The danger is that eventually we’ll lose touch with our own innate wisdom, and simply become a cog in a programmed society. Whatever our conscious minds are not aware of, or care not to deal with in the moment, our subconscious is absorbing and filing away. Let’s face it; there are many external forces at work vying for a piece of our minds…

Taking back ownership of our own minds is an important first step towards creating a new world. Our minds are powerful tools of creation, and as long as we allow them to be cluttered with negativity and despair, that is all we will ever experience. What will you choose to focus your mind on today… the media’s projection of doom and gloom, or your own glorious vision of your life and the world around you?
