Eternal Choices

Even as a child old enough to observe the world and critically question my existence, it did not make sense to me that I would simply blink in and blink out again for more or less 70 years or 80 years (according to the average life I saw around me). But when I stretched my mind to try and remember what came before, I could not.

I was also observing the discrepancies I saw, the unfairness as it were, of the circumstances of people, how some had been “given” a life with a lot to work with, and others did not. That did not make sense to me within the context of Christian religion I was simultaneously exploring. Why would an external God, one in essence Love, be so cruel as to give some so much, while others lived their whole lives in abject poverty and despair? And why would a God of love manipulate us through shame, a form of control?

Then I began to explore Eastern philosophy, and the concept of a soul living many lives in order to learn all the lessons we need to learn to ascend made sense. (And that our souls at a higher level choose these lessons, rather than they are thrust upon us.) As only one example, in some lives we may be poor, in others rich, or probably most often, somewhere in between. (Too “rich” is its own prison, with its own lessons.) I speak of rich here in terms of money, because that’s unfortunately the primary measuring stick of wealth in the society we currently inhabit. That, I believe, is about to change.

I did not discard or abandon the basic teachings or principles of Christianity. Those, in fact, are the foundation of many religions. For example, the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” That’s a very solid, basic foundation for the growth of a soul and on which to build a society.

So, look around you. Are we living it? Personally I think we need to get back to some very basic principles of life and how to live, instead of squabbling over the differences in religious dogma. It is dividing us. I don’t believe that would be the ultimate goal of any Creator, no matter what label we apply to that energy. The Native peoples have their own sense of that creative energy, expressed through the land and nature.

It seems that many are intent on converting everyone else to “their way”, prescribed through the dogma and rules of their particular religion. But perhaps if we all accepted that there are many paths to the same understanding of basic principles of love, cooperation, compassion, forgiveness, respect, we would move forward instead of constantly slipping backwards in terms of society. (Look at the state we’re in!) Why would or should such principles rooted in love ever become a competition?

When we let it become that, we are denying the beauty and grace and peace that is the essence of One. We are also denying ourselves the opportunity to make life here on Earth a better experience for everyone. If we let the competition fall away, united we could start to create a sort of heaven of physical experience and learning.

We have choice; we have free will. What will we build, together? Adopting reverence and respect for all life and each other would be a good start…

“If someone thinks that peace and love are just a cliche that must have been left behind in the 60s, that’s a problem. Peace and love are eternal.” ~ John Lennon

Precious

Families dissolve,
society dismantled.
The elephants weep.

I have much more to say about elephants, and how humans can learn from them. In fact, we can learn from all of nature. But that’s for another day.

I’ve been working all week on a compilation of the best from my Hart Haiku collection. Hart Haiku was my first blog site, and I posted there between May 2019 and August 2020. Each haiku was accompanied by expanded commentary in the posts.

That writing was important, because the haikus revealed to me what I most wanted to say. As it happened, it fell into three categories: Nature, humanity (including society), and self-fulfillment. That blog was therefore an important springboard for my writing moving forward. It’s also makes for an interesting collection, because I made special photo art cards to display the haikus. The ebook contains what I consider to be the 100 best.

Anyway, watch for the announcement this coming week when I get it listed in my store. Perhaps you’d like to pick up a copy. 🙂

Have a beautiful weekend. Please treasure your family.

Creator, beware!

When our Creator
gave us power to create,
what was the intent?

We are playing a
random game of chaos,
with no plan at all.

The mad scientists
concoct what they call progress –
Whose evolution?

Our human future
threatened by robotics, with
what repercussions?

Creativity
begs responsibility
to humanity –

How do we manage
an invention that could mean
our own extinction?

Falling

Waterfall of stars,
ride the night, wisher’s delight!
A meteor trick.

This haiku was written specially for Rebecca Cunningham’s (Fake Flamenco) May 2023 poetry challenge.

Rebecca’s prompt:
This month we will write a haiku (5/7/5 syllables) using the phrase “Waterfall of Stars.” While reading a YA story recommended by our teen called The Barren Grounds by David A. Robertson, Rebecca came across this phrase and thought it was beautiful. Haikus don’t officially have titles, though if you prefer to save your syllables you may use it that way.

There were a few slants I considered for this, but I finally decided on the scientific one. What we call falling (or shooting) stars, are in fact not stars at all. They are really meteoroids.

More of the science here: What causes a falling star?

Superstition says that wishing upon a falling star will grant your wish. However, as the next article points out, your might best wish that your “falling star” doesn’t hit our planet.

It’s getting bigger,
it’s getting A LOT bigger…
RUN, IT’S HITTING US!

(Just a little bonus haiku for you.) Lol And more about our wishfulness here: Why do we wish upon stars?

This was fun, Rebecca. Thanks for the challenge. 🙂

It’s the Love

The next quote by Carl Sagan brings the first one into poignant focus:

“The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.”

This second quote by Carl Sagan brings the first one into poignant focus. Think about it, has the Earth ever been without conflict between one faction and another? This jewel of a planet is a prize, but to whom? Do we honestly think it is merely humans that want possession of it? Or is there a much bigger story unfolding than we imagine? Is full possession of human beings also the ultimate prize for some of the power hungry?

When you think of human, do you think humans are capable of the sort of cruelty that you see before your very eyes? What human wakes up in the morning thinking, “Gee, I think it would be a really great idea to bomb people in another country today”? No, we’re not. We’re thinking about our work, our families, how to build a life within all of this madness. We love. And there’s the crucial difference. We love.

It’s our love for our families, our love of life that keeps us sane and going. But will love sustain us through all of this forever? I suppose in the higher realms, yes. But what about here on Earth, right now? While madmen are threatening each other with atomic bombs, and building robots that they hope will overtake human civilization, where are we in the equation? To those “inhumans”, we are mere cannon fodder in the pursuit of their domination.

Carl Sagan was right. We are too caught up in the minutiae of our lives, and not paying attention to the bigger drama unfolding before us. Yes, I think our love has the power to save us, but not in some fairy tale, Pollyanna way. Spiritual warriors love, yes, but they are also prepared to defend that which they love, with eyes wide open.

There is a very good word, it’s a very short and powerful one, but much underused. That word is “No”.
